The Three Qualities in Astrology
by Jackson Swift
In astrology, there are three main qualities. This is the second major classification that defines the nature of the sign (the first being the Elements). The qualities assign the signs to quadruplicities or three groups of four. The quadruplicities of astrological signs are sometimes referred to as crosses because each quality forms a cross when drawn across the zodiac.
Unlike the natural tendency of signs with the same element to work together smoothly, signs with the same quality generally do not complement each other.
The cardinal sign is associated with Aries Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. It is often related to initiation, action, leadership and creativity. People born under this zodiac can also be somewhat stubborn, selfish and demanding. Cardinal signs are also sometimes called movable signs as they initiate a change of temperate zone season when the sun makes its annual passage into them. The Cardinal houses are the First, Fourth, Seventh and Tenth
Fixed signs include Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. These are said to relate to focus, concentration, strength, stamina, perseverance, individuality and determination. Fixed signs are at the height of the four seasons. People born under fixed signs are said to be natural leaders who are both loyal and self-confident, however they can also be stubborn. The Fixed houses are Second, Fifth, Eighth and Eleventh
Mutable signs are associated with resourcefulness, versatility, change and adaptability. Signs that are mutable include Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Mutable signs are also called common signs, bicorporal or double-bodied. There is an inherent duality in its symbolism. These signs fall between two seasons. For instance, Gemini is between spring and summer. The Mutable houses are Third, Sixth, Ninth and Twelfth.
Learning both the elements and the qualities that influence the behavior of zodiac signs is a good first step to properly reading and analyzing astrological charts.
In the Middle Ages, mundane astrology was known as the study of Revolution, which looks at the orbital movements of planets around the Earth.
Today, Mundane Astrology refers to the application of this science-art to world events and affairs. Its name is derived from the Latin Mundus, which means “the World”. It serves two purposes. First, is to look back at historical patterns and explain the greater purpose of events (such as the rise and fall of empires or religions). The other is to predict the future.
There are two major approaches in the study of mundane astrology. The first, is to focus on national horoscopes. Countries are believed to have astrological charts or horoscope, such that each country is believed to have come into being during a certain time. Having such, lets an mundane astrologer look at the country’s natal potential.
The other way is to find correlations between geological phenomena (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, etc.) and the movement of the celestial bodies in the solar system. This is placed on the horoscope of astronomical placements at any given time.
A subset of mundane astrology is political astrology, which deals with the government, politicians, politics, and governing bodies of a particular nation, state or city.
